Food Remedies for Bad Breath

limesOne of the best ways to cure bad breath is with food remedies. It’s obvious that some of the foods we eat actually cause bad breath. Wouldn’t it make sense to assume that some of the other foods we consume can get rid of that bad breath? It can. There are some simple foods to turn to when you need to fight bad breath.

When using food as a bad breath remedy, it’s best to start with the basics. Focus on achieving a well-balanced diet. Not only is this healthy for your body, it’s also healthy for your breath. It’s widely understood that a variety of fresh foods in your diet helps to improve digestive function, and as a result, supports sweeter breath.

Another food remedy for bad breath: consuming more fibrous foods. As a matter of fact, it’s suggested that you decrease your intake of animal protein and replace it with foods high in fiber. Fibrous foods encourage quicker digestion. Meats tend to stick around in the digestive track, ridden with bacteria. This can throw off your body’s balance, and contribute to bad breath. But an increase in fibrous food will help pass meat through your system more rapidly.

There are several specific food remedies that have been shown to prevent and eliminate bad breath. One of the most common is parsley. Parsley contains a natural breath freshener: chlorophyll. Add this to your recipes, or merely chew on a sprig after meals (it’s not just there to decorate your plate!)

Another specific food to turn to: yogurt. Live-culture yogurt contains a bacteria called acidophilus. This bacteria, instead of contributing to bad breath, actually restores your intestinal bacteria balance. So, some bacteria is actually helpful to your breath.

A quality vitamin C supplement, or foods rich in vitamin C, can also act as a remedy for bad breath. Vitamin C has been shown to support oral health and reduce gum disease. Many times, gum disease can contribute to bad breath. So indirectly, vitamin C helps to prevents bad breath.

The old saying, ”We are what we eat,” has always been insightful. By watching the foods that go into our bodies, we can affect the odors that come out. In many cases, bad breath can be cured by healthier choices at meal times and simple, everyday food remedies.
