Today there are millions of over-the counter bad breath products available for use, but what about various prescription products? Prescription products, whether they be for a sinus infection, arthritis, the flu, or even bad breath, are thought to be more effective then their over-the counter “counterparts”. Today we will explore several bad breath prescription products available to those who suffer from the dreaded halitosis.
One prescription bad breath product that is not widely known about is an antibacterial tongue spray. This spray is extremely strong and eliminates bad breath by killing bacteria that reside on the tongue. Bacteria creates bad breath by emitting odorous sulfuric compounds. Antibacterial tongue spray contains zytex, which rapidly gets rid of these sulfuric compounds.
Probably the most common prescription or over-the-counter bad breath product on the market today is mouthwash. Most prescription mouthwashes are seen to be slightly more effective in eliminating odor then over-the counter products. Mouthwash is used to kill bacteria and to neutralize the sulfur compounds that the bacteria has already created.
It’s important when purchasing mouthwash to make sure it is alcohol free. Saliva is a key factor in the prevention of bad breath. Poor saliva flow can stimulate bacterial growth. By choosing a mouthwash which contains alcohol, you may be hindering your saliva flow, and therefore causing bad breath. Alcohol-free mouthwash is the only way in which to prevent bad breath.
It might be hard to believe, but there’s actually a prescription sugar-free gum that combats bad breath. There are two things this prescription gum can do for your mouth. Number one, it increases saliva flow. Again, as stated earlier, increased saliva flow deters bacteria from growing and causing bad breath. Second, this bad breath prescription gum actually inhibits the growth of s. mutans. This is the number one organism found in tooth decay. Tooth decay is a key factor in bad breath odor. The chemical that fights s. mutans is called xylitol. Unfortunately, this compound is typically found in prescription gum and not simple to get elsewhere, although you can find several internet companies that sell xylitol unadulterated and in the form of mints, gum, and other products.
Many times the elimination of bad breath can be fairly simple. Things such as regular flossing, or an increase in brushing can help. Other times bad breath is more serious and more of a chronic condition. In these cases a prescription may be needed. Ask your dentist about these prescription bad breath products to help eliminate your oral odor for good.
