Meth Breath — The Ugly Truth

On their hit album “Insomniac,” the band Green Day paints a chilling picture of a methamphetamine addict in the song, “Geek Stink Breath.” The title of the song refers to “meth breath,” which is one of the lesser known but more easily detectable signs of frequent methamphetamine use. Aptly enough, the lyrics refer to meth “rotting out my teeth,” which is one of the major contributors to bad breath in meth users.

DMSO and Bad Breath

During the 1950’s and 60’s, doctors closely studied the effects of DMSO, a common anti-inflammatory used previously only for animals. The drug has been viewed by many in both traditional and non-traditional medical fields as a treatment for arthritis. Many see DMSO by many as a “wonder drug” not only for its results in treating chronic pain, but because it has relatively few bad side effects. One of those bad side effects, however, is bad breath.
