There are a lot of people that suffer from post nasal drip and therefore, a lot of people that also suffer from bad breath. Post nasal drip happens when excess mucus drips down the back of your nose or throat. This mucus is continually being made by the cells that line the sinus passages. The mucus can irritate and settle on the nasal and throat lining which then causes a sore throat, bad breath, perhaps a cough and post nasal drip.
There are several over-the-counter antihistamines and nasal decongestants in any drugstore, but the drawback is, they can make a mouth extremely dry which can also cause bad breath. Before heading to the store to hunt for a solution to the “post-nasal drip / bad breath” cycle, consider trying a home remedy. All that is needed is patience, a little work, a good attitude and a few kitchen items.
Fill a regular-sized saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Pour approximately a cup of white vinegar into the boiling water. While being careful to not get too close, bend over the boiling water and inhale the steam/vinegar vapors through the nose and mouth. Every so often, use a tissue to blow your nose completely. After a few minutes of this process, the nasal congestions and sinus will be cleared. The steam and vinegar combination kills the bacteria very effectively in a completely natural way. Because the mucus problem is gradually blown away, so is the post nasal drip and bad breath problem. Each session should be about 15 minutes in length. The facial sauna can be repeated every 2 to 4 hours as needed. The bad breath causing post nasal drip should be gone in a day or two.
Some say that tea is known to stimulate cilia in the nose. This movement can reduce post nasal drip which will decrease bad breath bacteria. Surprisingly, the list for reducing bad breath bacteria caused by post-nasal drip also includes chicken soup and ice drinks.
It is important to note that not all individuals will respond to natural home remedies. One person’s immune system may work differently than another’s to curing bad breath with a home remedy. Persistent bad breath may be a sign of other underlying issues, so be sure to contact a medical professional for a chronic problem.
