One of the easiest things to do about bad breath is to establish good habits that prevent the condition from being established in the first place. The most important preventative measure surrounds oral hygiene, but there are other things you can do, too.
Let’s begin with oral hygiene since that is the most basic bad breath prevention you can use. Brush your teeth several times a day, and floss daily. This simple action will help reduce the over accumulation of bacteria that cause bad breath. Flossing really is important. Food particles will lodge between the teeth. Those particles are so small that you may not even know that they are there.
With floss, those little bits and pieces are gently nudged out of their hiding places. Without flossing, they remain between your teeth and eventually break down. Well, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to realize that those particles breaking down will only cause trouble in your mouth! Not only does decomposing food smell, it becomes a haven for bacteria. It is easy to see how removing this source of bad breath is an important part of prevention.
Another method of preventing bad breath has to do with diet and nutrition. There are foods that worsen breath, especially for those who are prone to the problem. Coffee can really exacerbate the problem. Now, I would never suggest that anyone give up coffee totally, but it is a good idea limit the amount of coffee you drink, and then give your mouth a good cleaning. Brush your teeth and even consider a quick saltwater gargle after you have had your morning java fix. This will reduce the impact of coffee on your breath.
We easily see the results on our breath whenever we eat foods that have very strong odors, such as garlic and onions. These foods are really good for your digestion, so I don’t recommend giving them up, just managing their odor-inducing issues is a good idea. Mouth washes can mask the problem without really removing the cause. Brushing your teeth and tongue after meals that are heavy in garlic and onions can be very effective.
I really believe that awareness is the biggest single factor affecting prevention of conditions such as bad breath. When we realize what things make a situation worse, we can avoid those things, or at least lessen their impact. Bad breath doesn’t have to ruin your social life or embarrass you with coworkers, family and friends. You can prevent this problem and work effectively to lessen the impact of things that can aggravate the problem.
