Tonsil Crypts Explained

Tonsil Crypts are small pockets that form on the outside of your tonsils. It’s these pockets or tonsil crypts that collect debris, like the mucus from nasal drip as well as food particles. When accumulated, this debris forms what is called tonsil stones (tonsilloliths).

When all of this collects in the tonsil crypts, you will not only get symptoms as sore throat and a raspy voice, but also halitosis or bad breath. If you are one of many who do not have their tonsils, then tonsil crypts is one problem you will never have to deal with!

Even if you and or your doctor decide that your tonsils, along with the crypts, have to come out, will you still have to deal with bad breath? The answer to this question is yes.

Sulfur-producing bacteria is what causes bad breath. When the mucus and food debris gets in these pockets or tonsil crypts, the combination, along with the sulfur, makes for a very toxic reaction called bad breath.

There is something you can try to help combat the bad breath from the tonsil crypts, and that is to use a saline-soda gargle on a regular basis, such as 3 times a day. Even possibly using a Water-Pik type device would be good start. Give it a try for a few months and see what happens.

If the bad breath persists, and the problem doesn’t get any better, then a trip to the doctor is in order. There, you and the doctor can discuss your options and removal of your tonsils along with the crypts.

But this is not to say you will get rid of your bad breath. The tonsil stones may still permeate the area on the back of the tongue. Since you can’t get rid of your tongue, there a various treatments you can try.

While brushing your teeth, make sure you brush your tongue, as far bask as you can with out gagging. Using an oxygenating toothpaste as well as mouth wash may help the problem subside. When you use this combination together along with nasal drops, you will get a residual effect that will stop the stones from ever forming.

If for some reason this doesn’t work, or you are not comfortable with this method, consult with your doctor as to the best course of action to take not only on the tonsil crypts, but on your bad breath in general.
